Grease is the word – for the Flin Flon Community Choir.

The choir will perform the world-famous 1950s-themed musical in May.

Choir director Crystal Kolt says she views Grease as the ideal production to showcase the young new faces who have joined the choir.

The teenage-centric play will also help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the current Hapnot Collegiate building.

Jaqueline Loewen, a professional Winnipeg-based director with opera experience in Winnipeg and Vancouver, will direct the musical.

Kolt says landing the rights to Grease was more complicated than she had anticipated. After about eight months of trying, the choir received the green light in September, two days before Culture Days.

With a director lined up, the next big step forward for the show will be the auditions scheduled for
Nov. 26 and 27.

“A lot of people have been asking when auditions were, so I hope [there’s a good turnout],” says Kolt. “It’s really important to have as many people as possible so we can choose the right people for the parts.”

Grease is a 1971 musical made famous by the 1978 film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. It is named after the 1950s youth subculture known as greasers.

Grease will be the choir’s latest major production highly successful efforts such as 2015’s Les Misérables, 2013’s Chicago and 2011’s Fiddler on the Roof.

The choir will perform Grease May 5, 6 and 7, 2017 at the RH Channing Auditorium.
