Happy New Year! Welcome to a new year of arts and cultural activity in Flin Flon and area.

Choir

Flin Flon Community Choir kicks off rehearsals again on Saturday, Jan. 9 at École McIsaac School band room. They will be preparing to sing “Lux Aeterna” by Morten Lauridsen, at Carnegie Hall in New York City. It is a gorgeous piece by a contemporary American composer.

Lauridsen was born in Washington state in 1947 and has taught music composition at University of Southern California since 1967. “Lux Aeterna” is a vocal cycle of sacred music that was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1998.

Conductor and musicologist Nick Strimple said, “He is the only American composer in history who can be called mystic. His probing, serene work...leaves the impression that all the questions have been answered.”

This is going to be an astonishing show for the community choir, under the baton once again of maestro Jonathan Griffith, and you can come along to New York to see them!

The hotel has been chosen and if you call Crystal Kolt, cultural coordinator at the Flin Flon Arts Council office, you will get all the information about costs and performance time. It was an unbelievable experience last time, with lots of time to take in all of the sights and shows of the city.

Wood ’n’ Wire

Johnny’s Social Club is the venue once again for Wood ’n’ Wire. The weekend of Jan. 23 and 24 is packed with amazing arts events.

On Saturday, Jan. 23, three awesome women will share the stage and their talent, along with the Anti-social Band.

Kristen Imrie, Kim Jones and Faith Krahn will sing a variety of musical styles, both original and cover songs, backed by musicians Mark Kolt, Craig Bancroft, John Bettger and Dave Gunn.

The cost is $15 and tickets are available at The Orange Toad. Patrons are able to bring along their own treats to the event.

Robbie Burns

On Sunday, Jan. 24 we have a celebration of the poet Robert Burns’ birth, again at Johnny’s Social Club. This Arts Council-sponsored event begins at 4 pm and will be a fierce Scottish evening!

Robert (Rabbie) Burns was born on Jan. 25, 1759 (yes, that is a long time ago) in Ayrshire, Scotland – same as me (only not quite so long ago) – and his birth is marked all over the world (because Scots like to remember Scotland) with dinner and entertainment (and a little Scotch whisky).

The Flin Flon event will be quite traditional. “Tae a Haggis” read by Murray MacDonald will kick things off at 4:30. Then we will have a haggis and neeps appetizer, and dinner prepared by chef Darinel Rivera and a program of Scots songs and poetry.

Expect a tiny dram of whisky to pass your lips. Tickets are $25 and are available at The Orange Toad. Patrons will be able to bring their own treats.
