Elly on the Arts: A full stocking for live-music, theatre buffs

What a wonderful weekend with a Christmas concert from Jesse Peters. Of course the Flin Flon Community Choir was the best part! Actually, they only sang two songs but they sounded fantastic and looked very professional.

What a wonderful weekend with a Christmas concert from Jesse Peters. Of course the Flin Flon Community Choir was the best part! Actually, they only sang two songs but they sounded fantastic and looked very professional.

We would have enjoyed more but it’s probably not in the Christmas spirit to outshine the guest performers. To be fair (and you know I’m NOT biased), the musicians who traveled all the way from Edmonton were very good and the guitar player, who originally hails from Snow Lake, was excellent.

Next up for Flin Flon and area, to keep the Christmas theme going, is Borealis Chamber Choir singing a traditional Lessons and Carols service at the Lutheran Church on Second Avenue. This has become a lovely tradition in Flin Flon over the last decade.

The choir, which ranges from 16 to 24 voices depending on personal schedules, begins rehearsing at the beginning of November to sing Christmas hymns and carols, to really kickstart the season of goodwill.

There will be some new carols as well as many familiar favourites, with some sung by Borealis only and others sung by all.

If you have not attended this event in past Christmas seasons, you should know that the “price of admission” is a non-perishable food item, to be donated to the Lord’s Bounty Food Bank.

There’s also an opportunity to make a financial donation to support the food bank and, if your donation is $20 or more, you are eligible for a tax receipt.

In recent years Borealis has been able to raise $1,000-plus for the food bank, which goes a long way to making Christmas happier for those less fortunate in our communities.

Lessons and Carols will be at the Lutheran Church at 3:30 pm on Sunday, Dec. 6 with doors opening at 3 pm. There is no cost for this event, just your donations to the food bank. Seating is in pews, so no assigned seats!

Later in December, Ham Sandwich presents Harvey, a play by Mary Chase, who won the Pulitzer Prize for it in 1945.

It is a comedy about Elwood P. Dowd, a good-natured man with an unseen friend, Harvey, whom he describes as a 6-ft 3-in rabbit.

Harvey might be a figment of his imagination – that’s certainly the opinion of his sister – but Elwood sees him.

The play has had several runs on Broadway and in London’s West End, most recently in 2012. But perhaps most famous is the movie version starring James Stewart. It’s quite endearing.

Ham Sandwich is guaranteed to bring a delightful version to life, directed by Thomas Heine. Harvey runs at the RH Channing Auditorium on Dec. 12 and 13. Sunday, Dec. 13 is a matinee show. Tickets are $15 and are available at Northern Rainbow’s End and the Arts Council office.

And finally, NorVA Centre has a great variety of beautiful and affordable gifts for the discerning shopper at Christmas time. They are unique and all made by local artists. Please stop by and check them out, every day except Mondays.
